Substation fire knocked out power for more than 8,000 customers in Davis County

CENTERVILLE ā€” Power was restored Monday morning after a substation fire knocked out power to over 8,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers in south Davis County.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Residents in Centerville, Woods Cross, West Bountiful and surrounding areas experienced outages through late Monday morning.

Jona Whitesides, with Rocky Mountain Power, said the fire began at a substation near Legacy Parkway and Parrish Lane in Centerville and also affected another nearby substation.

“That’s why you’re seeing those two major outages,” he said.

“Early reports are that there was an explosion and associated fire at the power substation on the west side” of Centerville, according to the Centerville Police Department.

The outage led to “normal flare-off” operations at local refineries, according to the South Davis Metro Fire Department, and thick smoke was seen from across the valley.
